The book examines critically the conception of Nordic countries as "equal democracies" from two perspectives: how equal are women and men in politics in the Nordic societies and to what extent we can talk about "a Nordic Model" of gender relations in politics? It looks both at the position of women in political decision-making in the five countries and at the relationship between the participation of women and the content of politics, offering also the first in-depth analysis of institutionalised gender equality policies, including the local level, in the Nordic countries from a comparative perspective. The book is the result of a joint Nordic project with scholars specialising in the research on gender and politics.
