The study examines the political recruitment of local councillors in Finland on the basis of extensive survey material. The focus of the study is on the overall process of political recruitment, from the supply of candidates to the actual election of councillors. The author looks at the process using three sets of variables: institutional traits, party-related factors and individual attributes, and discusses the most crucial factors in determining the success in nominations and elections of candidates. Some gender sensitive analyses are presented, although they are in a marginal role.
